Kurt Cobain was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the guitarist and frontman of the rock band Nirvana. He is regarded as a Generation X icon. He is considered to be one among the most iconic and influential rock musicians in the history of alternative music.
Together with Krist Novoselic and Aaron Burckhard, Cobain formed the band Nirvana in 1987. Nirvana released their first album Bleach with Sub Pop Records in 1989. Their second album was Nevermind released with major label DGC Records. Nevermind’s lead single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” got them mainstream success. Since their debut, Nirvana has sold more than 25 million albums in the United States alone, and over 80 million worldwide.
MTV ranked Cobain as seventh in the “22 Greatest Voices in Music”. In 2006, Hit Parader placed him at number twenty on their list of the “100 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time”. He featured in multiple Rolling Stone’s lists of the greatest guitarist of all time. In 2014, he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.
