Michael Phelps is an American former competitive swimmer. With 28 medals in his bag, he is the most successful Olympian of all time. He is often touted as the greatest swimmer of all time.

Phelps was the most successful athlete in each edition of the Olympics from 2004 to 2016. He won six gold and two bronze medals in 2004, eight gold medals in 2008, four gold and two silver medals in 2012, and five gold medals and one silver in 2016. Phelps’ eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games are the most ever won by an athlete in a single Olympics. He has won most gold medals (23) in the history of the Olympics. He also holds the records for winning most Olympic gold medals in individual events (13), and Olympic medals in individual events (16).

His stellar career has earned Phelps the World Swimmer of the Year Award eight times and American Swimmer of the Year Award eleven times, as well as the FINA Swimmer of the Year Award in 2012 and 2016. Sports Illustrated magazine named him Sportsman of the Year for his unprecedented success at the 2008 Olympics.
