Paulo Coelho, best known for his internationally renowned book The Alchemist, is a Brazilian lyricist and novelist. In 2016, Coelho was listed by UK-based company Richtopia at number 2 in the list of 200 most influential contemporary authors.
Coelho wanted to become a writer since he was a teenager. However, at his parents’ wishes, he enrolled in law school and abandoned his dream of becoming a writer. He dropped out of college a year later and spent his time travelling the world. When Coelho returned to Brazil, he started working as a songwriter.
Coelho’s first book Hell Archives came out in 1982. In 1988, he wrote The Alchemist and published it through a small Brazilian publishing house that made an initial print run of 900 copies and decided not to reprint it. In 1994, HarperCollins decided to publish the book. Later, it became an international bestseller.
Coelho’s work has been published in more than 170 countries and translated into eighty languages. Together, his books have sold hundreds of millions of copies.
