Steven Spielberg is an American filmmaker. He is one of the most popular directors and producers in film history and is often praised for his directing talent and versatility. He is also the co-founder of Amblin Entertainment and DreamWorks Studios.

Spielberg first tasted success as the director of his 1975 release Jaws. Jaws, a critically and commercially successful movie, made Spielberg a household name. His later movies— E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Schindler’s List (1993), Amistad (1997),Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Lincoln (2012)—consolidated  his place among the pioneers of Hollywood.

Spielberg has been nominated for seven Academy Awards for the category of Best Director. He has won the coveted award twice, for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.

Spielberg was appointed as an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2001 by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the entertainment industry of the United Kingdom. In 2004, he was admitted as a knight of the Légion d’honneur by president French Jacques Chirac. On November 24, 2015, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

In 2005, Empire magazine rated Spielberg the greatest film director of all time.
