Winston Churchill was a British politician and writer. He was a two-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, first from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He led Britain to victory in the testing time of the Second World War.

Churchill was a prolific writer. He wrote a novel and two biographies. He also penned three volumes of memoirs and several histories. In 1953, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature “for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values”. Churchill took great pleasure in painting. Throughout his lifetime, he painted hundreds of paintings, many of which are on show in the studio at Chartwell as well as private collections.

TIME rated Churchill as one of the most influential leaders in history. He was voted number one in a 2002 BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons of all time.
